I'm working on a personal project for the summer and if you haven't guessed, it's going to be completely in black and white. I'm excited to be sharing some sneak peeks while the project is being developed! Yesterday, I had the opportunity to capture Moriah of Something Blue Events at Brown's Island & Belle Isle and had tons of fun!
At first, I was thinking that this summer was going to be slow. But as I am planning and things are coming together, it looks as though it will actually be pretty busy. There are projects and promotions that are coming, so keep an eye out! There are personal goals that I've set that I'm pretty excited about! I'm also taking this summer to focus more on Photography full time. Taking pictures and editing is easy. But then you have to think about the business side too. You have to think about marketing, bookkeeping, the whole works.
It's weird, because while most find the summer to be for going to the beach, traveling, and resting - I find it for reflecting, learning, trying something new. I promise, I'm not a boring old lady, I absolutely LOVE going to the beach and I'll for sure be talking about the beach throughout the summer. I enjoy getting tanned like the rest of you. :)
Summer is like the end of the year for me because sometimes the busy-ness of life seems to slow down for just a little bit during these months. One year I used my summer and took a pottery class and started ballroom dancing lessons. This summer, on top of personal photography projects, I'm definitely going to focus on two major things related to improving my physical and mental well-being. I'm not much of a reader as I used to be, but I'm planning to get through at least 1 book each month. Then re-establishing the work out routine that I need to have (but I won't get much into those details yet).
But mostly, I do want to start giving some sneak peeks on a photography project that I will be working on. If you know how I am as a photographer, you will know that I absolutely love black and white. Mainly because I find so much more emotional connection with the image. Black and white mutes distractions and focuses in on the very essence of the subject that is captured. If I could only be a black and white photographer, I would absolutely love it! Anyways, I'm taking the summer to do a this series with a few models. It is definitely going to be different in some way style wise, but also still relatively the same. I will get into further details as I share images, but I'm excited to share with you all!
I would love to hear about your summer plans! Are you doing any traveling? Do you have a reading list? Have you set any goals?
So, I've mentioned before that I absolutely love sports! Although I haven't had the opportunity as of late to keep up with it as much as I would like over the years, I absolutely look forward to March Madness the most. It's like a holiday for me - especially when it comes to making my bracket.
I get absolutely emotional when it comes to my bracket. I make one every year and I love when I can take the time to spend HOURS researching the strengths and weaknesses of each team and decide on who I think will win. As of late, I have not had that time luxury. =(
This year, I have Kentucky winning. I just can't seem to get myself to go against them. I really think that they could go undefeated this year - as I don't see a team that could face them and actually win. Anyways, here is my bracket - I will say I'm a bit embarrassed this year because I'm doing very poorly. I randomly decided to have Georgetown in the championship game against Kentucky (poor move) and they lost in the Round of 32. Hopefully I can at least win the league I'm in ;)
Have you done a bracket?
I've never taken the time to really share who I am - yet I want you to know more about me. In order for that to happen, I should share more about myself, right?
My "About Me" section just isn't enough. Yes, it shares a mini snippet of my interests and how I got started - but it doesn't give the impression of everything there is to know about JaQuayla Cameron. It's going to change, starting today. Every Tuesday, I will be sharing some things about myself that you may or may not know - the topics are endless. If you have any suggestions on what you want to know about myself, don't hesitate to ask. I actually will ask at the end of every post if there is anything you do what to know. ;)
Every Friday I will be sharing something photography related. Again, this opens the floor to endless possibilities. Anything you want to know? Ask! I'll treat this just like my personal posts!
So Who Is JaQuayla?
I'm like an onion. There are so many things about myself that I even have to think in order to completely unfold. I'm not crazy (figured I'd give that disclaimer) - just different.
I grew up as a tomboy - so this above picture (Taken by Bulloss Photography btw, who is AWESOME) is such a shock to people that I've known growing up. I used to want to be a boy (now I'm really glad I'm not), so I hated dressing up, wearing makeup, and whatever else constituted as girly-ness. As a matter of fact, to this day I would love to wear hoodies and sweatpants all day everyday. To put my hair in a ponytail. I really don't like wearing heels. However, there are those days where I want to look nice and I bring it up a notch.
I love working out...
It takes some effort to get there - but once I'm there and once I'm done, I'm in heaven (Endorphins baby!).
I love sports...
I love being able to just sit around and spend time with a group of guys and talk about sports. I actually like being able to sit around and NOT talk about guys - how cute they are, etc. I feel that's best done when you're with a group of guys, right? haha. No, but seriously I love sports so much and it is pretty sad that I haven't been able to keep up with it nearly as much as I used to. I've played basketball for years and I still love to play pick-up from time to time. I'm a big New York Giants fan. I'm a New York Yankees fan. I'm a Syracuse Orange fan. Los Angeles Lakers fan. I love Derrick Rose. Lastly, I'm a Russell Wilson fan.
I love to laugh...
oh I really love to laugh. While I enjoy spending time with so many different types of people - the ones that I enjoy spending most of my time with are the ones that I can have deep conversations with and those that can make me laugh hysterically. I love to watch things that make me laugh. Kevin Hart and Chris Rock are my favorite comedians.
I love ice cream...
Yes. Yes. Yes. Ice cream is just my guilty pleasure. It's my comfort food. I could eat my emotions away with ice cream. My favorite is Haagen Dazs Vanilla Swiss Almond. I also really like White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle. I just really like ice cream. I jokingly tell my friends that if a guy were to propose to me with Ice Cream - he'd get an automatic yes. But to be completely honest, I'm a little serious. I hope I get proposed to with ice cream. I never could come up with a solid bucket list until I came across this list of the 21 best ice cream shops in America If I could get to all 21, I would feel as though I've accomplished something great. I basically just lost track by discussing my love for ice cream - it happens ;)
I love using ellipses...
I actually use it a lot in conversational writing - I actually use it from time to time in my blogs. I do not know where the habit came from, but I'm sure it is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Mostly, I love Jesus Christ...
I could go on and on about how much the things that I have mentioned before has grown me to love the Lord even more. It's like - He has given me those things and created them as just a small portion of a display of His love for me. I mean, He sacrificed His life just for me. Because of that, I can't help but love Him in return. This sounds so generic - but my relationship with Him is serious to me. I don't think I could be anywhere without Him. Actually I know I wouldn't. I'd be a mess.
Well, here is just a beginning randomized snippet. All of my blogs in the future will be more topical focused. Anything specific you'd like to know? Seriously, don't hesitate to ask. =)
The fact that it is March and I am just now getting a push as to what I would like for 2015 to look like. Better late than never, right?
I'll be completely honest. I have a degree in Public Relations, I have learned the importance of social media, blogging, search engine optimization (SEO) for the purpose of business/campaigns and I absolutely do a horrible job at keeping up with it. That's something that I absolutely have to get better at. Even when I'm not shooting, I have to constantly create interactions and engage - have a strong social media presence not only on a personal side, but on a business side as well.
As I'm nearing the end of my Master's degree program, I realized that I really need to get into the habit of efficiently utilizing the tools that I do have. It comes first by mastering SEO, making sure that I am properly advertising where I need to be, and also utilizing the tools that I already have available (blogging, Facebook, Instagram). I am coming across some very interesting techniques that I am really excited about utilizing.
I am also realizing how important it is that I create a business budget. I typically set a budget for my personal expenses (that I have somehow slacked on the last few months), but never really do much as a business. Being that I am starting to gain a larger client based than before, I'm noticing that I really need to do so. How much do I need to put into equipment - how much for advertising. How much is too much? When do I say no? All of these are questions that I have to ask myself when it comes to budgeting (among others).
I've booked 2 weddings on my own and I am second shooting 3 thus far. There will most likely be more that I am second shooting for as the Spring starts to roll in some more. But I am really excited about shooting these 5 because
1. That's almost total amount of weddings that I have shot period. I've shot 2 for 2014. 3 for 2013. 1 in 2011. I will jump from have shooting only 6 weddings, to shooting 11. In just a year. The crazy thing is, it is only March more could come.
2. I'm getting my foot in the door. The quality of my images have drastically improved since I've first started. I'm not the best, but I do feel more confident in the work that I can produce for these weddings. It will allow for my wedding portfolio to be stronger - which can ultimately bring in more clients.
I am hoping that I can really get a decent amount of second shooting over the summer. I have been put on a couple of priority lists for second shooting for a couple of photographers, so we will see where that goes!
I really would love to begin booking more portrait sessions. If I can bring in about 10-15 clients this year, I would be pretty happy about it. Thus far I have 1 booked - so it is coming pretty slowly. But of course, that largely comes from have to better advertise.
While I have aspirations for where I want to take this year - I know that there are things that I need to do to complete them. But I am ready for the challenge and I am looking forward to an already amazing year!
Also, I will be doing a lot better at blogging - I promise =)
